The most recent example of this is taking place in Haiti, where rebel gangs have seized control of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and threaten to bring the entire nation spiraling into an abyss. Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation Monday, March 11, following increasing pressure from the gangs. However, assigning blame to either of the so-called “factions” in the country is a fool’s errand. Rather, the cause must be found outside, in the overriding system that has doomed Haiti to its current tragic state. |
George Orwell's famous comment from his novel "1984", that "War is Peace", was the theme of NATO General Secretary Stoltenberg in a celebration marking Sweden's membership in NATO. If we want peace, he said, we must continue "to provide military support to Ukraine." The Assembly was called into informal session to review the “use of veto,” as seen in the UN Security Council in recent months. The focus of attention and opprobrium was the United States’ veto on Feb. 20, of a ceasefire resolution for Gaza, which was the third such veto by the U.S. In introducing the session, UN General Assembly President Ambassador Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago rightly described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic, unconscionable, shameful.” |
