Two important statements regarding the state of the world were made yesterday. In remarks made to CBS news on Dec. 25, Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said: “Recently, Pentagon generals have openly deliberated on the potential for `limited nuclear strikes’ with the Russian Federation, with the intention to ensure they emerge victorious from such an `exchange.’ We directly inquired (since it was indeed a general who made the statement) about the meaning behind this. Their response was far from satisfactory, as they attempted to downplay the significance of such declarations, claiming they were purely theoretical. In practice, nothing of the sort was intended. But can such rhetoric be regarded as a serious expression of opinion from an official military department representative?”

Russia Today made it clear, in their coverage of the interview that Lavrov was referring, not to a general, but to Adm. Thomas Buchanan, Director of the Plans and Policy Directorate of the U.S. Strategic Command, whom The LaRouche Organization has conducted a leafleting campaign for the past weeks.

Then, in his Dec. 25 Urbi and Orbi speech, given from the central balcony of St. Peter’s basilica, Pope Francis said, “May the sound of arms be silenced in war-torn Ukraine…. May the Son of the Most High sustain the efforts of the international community to facilitate access to humanitarian aid for the civilian population of Sudan and to initiate new negotiations for a ceasefire…Francis added. “I think of the Christian communities in Israel and Palestine, particularly in Gaza, where the humanitarian situation is extremely grave….May there be a ceasefire, may the hostages be released and aid be given to the people worn out by hunger and by war.”

As the year ends, and LaRouche forces worldwide take the opportunity of year’s end to consider what must be done to change the trans-Atlantic world’s trajectory toward annihilation, it is wise to keep in mind Rev. Martin Luther King’s words, delivered “from the mountaintop.” “The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land; confusion all around. That's a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.”

Urgent: Diplomacy and Dialogue for Ukraine and Gaza

May 29, 2025 (EIRNS)—One thematic throughout the just-concluded Schiller Institute international conference, was the necessity of diplomacy and dialogue in world affairs. This was even personified in the proceedings by the participation of veteran diplomats, including U.S. Ambassador Jack Matlock, and current world leader Dr. Naledi Pandor, former South African Minister of Foreign Affairs.
