U.S.-Iran Talks Announced for April 12; Trump Issues Belligerent Tariffs Ultimatum to China; Keep the Focus on a New Security Paradigm for All
By Marcia Merry BakerApril 7, 2025 (EIRNS)—We have an extremely explosive international environment, with dangers and complexities. In the forefront are the threats of war instigation against Iran, and of economic and financial chaos, from the U.S. tariff instigation hitting atop a monetarist, globalist debt system already in breakdown. There is no use prognosticating over where it will all end. Instead, the future depends on acting on the opportunities to intervene.
This afternoon at the White House, President Donald Trump announced to media that this Saturday, April 12, there would be talks between the U.S. and Iran. He gave no additional details on the location, or attendees, except to say that the meeting would involve officials “near the top level.” This is very positive. Even more so, as it was said in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting Washington today, who has been pushing to attack Iran, amidst his warfare throughout the region, and sabotage of diplomacy.
It is estimated that IDF forces are now on the ground in control of over 50% of the Gaza Strip. The IDF gave orders over the past 24 hours, for much of Central Gaza to evacuate. To where? IDF shelling, air strikes and murder continue. Netanyahu joined in with Trump at the White House media briefing today, to reiterate their degraded proposal from February, that Palestinians would be better off to leave.
At the same time, in Cairo today, the opposite vision was put forward at a meeting hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, with King Abdullah II of Jordan, and French President Emmanuel Macron. They issued a statement calling for emergency humanitarian aid to Gaza, and for support of the reconstruction plan for Palestinians in Gaza, that Egypt had issued in early March.
These and other strategic events unfold amidst extreme turmoil in the Western stock exchanges, and ominous kinks appearing in the supply lines and centers of physical production in many locations. The proximate cause of the chaos is President Trump’s April 2 “Liberation Day” announcement of the 10% U.S. general tariff on goods from all countries, plus his so-called “reciprocal” country-by-country tariffs. They are to go into effect April 9. They hit on top of decades of “global sourcing,” and enforced impoverishment and debt burden on poor nations; and at the same time, destructuring of the U.S., European, and other so-called “advanced” economies. This old order should be replaced.
Helga Zepp-LaRouche, Schiller Institute founder and leader, reviewing the situation, posed what she called the Big Question: Which will happen first? Trump’s “success” with his attempt to impose new world trading relations? Or the crash of the whole system?
Now comes yet another crazy factor. Midday today, President Trump issued a raving ultimatum to China on tariffs. China had announced last Friday, April 4, that if Trump’s new tariffs on China start on April 9, then China on April 10 will start a 34% tariff on U.S. imports, and implement certain other specified new import regulations.
Trump then declared today that China was acting, “above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, [which] will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those initially set. Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th. Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!” He said negotiations will start with other nations. Today, he spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
In contrast to the Trump Administration’s crazed views of, and reactions to, the globalist speculative system, Lyndon LaRouche had explained the collapse dynamic years ago. Listen to this three-minute video of LaRouche from Aug. 18, 2002, warning of the crisis we face now.
The alternative to the crisis was spelled out today by Zepp-LaRouche, in her article posted by China’s CGTN, headlined, “What Could U.S. Tariff Policy Lead To?” She wrote, “The only thing which will remedy the economic crisis in the U.S., and elsewhere, is a return to sound physical economy principles: investment in scientific and technological progress, international space cooperation and innovation in general,” she wrote, and then concluded:
“The trade imbalances will be removed by making the pie bigger, taking into account the different characteristics and levels of development of the individual economies in a fair division of labor. ‘Humanity first’ will lead to a win-win outcome for everyone.”
