Chaos Deepens in Europe: European Commission President Calls for "Permanent State of Emergency"
By Harley SchlangerIn an election in which reality was largely excluded by the corporate, neoliberal media, German voters dumped the coalition government of Olaf Scholz, but left the future largely undefined. There was little discussion of the Ukraine war, German economic decline and deindustrialization, and relations with Russia and China. It is unlikely that the CDU's Friedrich Merz can form a stable coalition to govern, especially if he insists on maintaining the "firewall" to exclude the Alternative for Germany Party from being in the coalition, despite their strong second place finish. Like it or not, Germany's future is being shaped by U.S.-Russian moves toward "normalization" of relations. Where does that leave Germany, and Europe? Ursula von der Leyen has said Europe is moving into a "permanent state of emergency."
