NEW YORK, Jan. 27 — Fifty years ago today, the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to establish the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities, known as the “Church Committee,” chaired by Idaho Democratic Sen. Frank Church.

Fifty years ago today, the Church Committee was formed by the Senate to end abuses committed by government intelligence and security agencies.
