The present conflict over Gaza is veering towards a deeper U.S. involvement, based on a strategy of Henry Kissinger called the "Breakaway Ally Scenario". Advanced later as part of the Wolfowitz Doctrine, it is part of a devious strategy to defend the interests of the Military Industrial Complex against revolt by sovereign states, by using client states such as Israel, to trigger larger wars. It is truly insane -- but it is the present policy of the western Establishment, supported by both U.S. political parties, even though many of their corrupt members do not know that's what they are doing..
