The ruling last week by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on allegations of genocide by Israel offers a path to a new security and development architecture.

The UN Security Council will meet to hear a motion to make the International Court of Justice provisional measures to stop genocide in Gaza "binding."

Jan. 29—Last week’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling in The Hague has put the world dynamic into stark relief. It was always a misnomer to discuss the war in Gaza as merely an issue of Israel’s occupation and the ensuing response to that by Hamas. While that certainly plays a factor, it is a managed factor, a mere player on the stage of a poorly-directed drama. But it is directed, nonetheless.

Will the death of 3 American soldiers in Jordan be the excuse for a U.S. war with Iran?  The establishment is cornered, and therefore dangerous.

Jan. 28—Former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray pointed out, in the hours following South Africa’s (and the world’s) victory at the International Court of Justice on January 26, that “it’s getting more difficult” for the Anglo-American establishment to ignore the power of truth, which, in some circumstances, as in Germany, 1989, can overturn despotism by “knocking out the brains of falsehood.”

Jan. 27—The government of Algeria announced over the weekend that it has requested that the UN Security Council be urgently convened this coming Wednesday, Jan. 31, to give “binding effect” to the historic Jan. 26 decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the matter of South Africa’s charges of Israeli genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. UN Security Council resolutions—if they can get past U.S. and British vetoes—are in fact internationally legally enforceable. ICJ decisions are legally binding on the parties, but the Court has no enforcement mechanism of its own.

Jan. 26—In a world grown accustomed to crazy, the drama that played out at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, starting at high noon today and continuing for almost an hour, was remarkable for sustained common sense.

Jan. 25—Mid-day at The Hague on Friday, January 26, the decision of the 18 judges will be read out at the International Court of Justice (World Court) in the case brought against Israel by South Africa, to stop Israel’s violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, from Israel’s atrocities in Gaza. Dr. Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, will lead her country’s delegation to the Court for the reading.

Stopping short of demanding a ceasefire, the ICJ ruled that South Africa's claims are justified and Israel must stop "further genocidal acts."

Jan. 24—The contrast between the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland with the Non-Aligned Movement meeting in Kampala, Uganda, is emblematic of the divergent impulses in the world today.

When the ICJ issues its ruling Friday on the case presented against Israel, not only is the credibility of the court at stake; it is a moral test for us all!
