As Biden Stumbles Through Kiev, a Gideon's Army Begins Assembling to End NATO's War
By Harley Schlanger
Biden in Kiev, Feb. 20, 2023, to promise more weapons and more death.
With NATO bracing for a Russian offensive, with Ukraine's army undermanned and under-armed, and NATO officials admitting the alliance has nearly depleted its weapons stockpiles, Joe Biden was sent for a stroll through Kiev, with air raid sirens wailing in the background. A pro-war Atlantic Council hack, Daniel Fried, an expert at imposing killer sanctions, proclaimed Biden's visit as ranking "with other great presidential moments of leadership in defense of freedom", comparing it to JFK's "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, and Ronald Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" address. This public relations stunt was aimed at creating an "indelible memory", to rally enthusiasm in Kiev and in NATO capitals for a war that leading U.S. defense officials privately are coming to admit is lost.
But coming after last week's NATO Defense Minister's rally and two days of delusional pep talks at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), perhaps those who planned the stroll with Zelensky think that symbolism can make up for the lack of manpower and weapons, and a declining industrial infrastructure incapable of being revved up in time to stave off a disaster.
The public relations' side of these events is, in part, an attempt to counter a growing movement against the war, which became more visible in the last days. As the MSC featured multiple speakers praising the heroic efforts of the U.S. Air Force to blow balloons out of the sky, and fanciful reports of the collapse of the Russian army, a large crowd of demonstrators marched in Munich, demanding an end to the lunacy of the war. This was bolstered by a rally and march in Washington, D.C., against the war machine, which featured an array of speakers from across the political spectrum, including three former U.S. Congressmen. Estimated at 5,000 or so attendees, the size was less important than two factors which made it unique, and threatening to the war hawks engaging in self-congratulation in Munich.
First, the diversity of the coalition for the march, which included leaders from the Libertarian Party and the People's Party, was unusual. Speakers, and those in the audience, broke the profile of left-right polarization, as the message in Washington focused on ending the war, a point made by all speakers. Left-right polarization and "identity politics" are weapons designed to keep opponents divided, giving Congress a free hand for bipartisan support for the insane war policies of the Military-Industrial Complex. The narrative of lies supporting the war, from the overarching anti-Putin line of Russiagate to the virtue of the NATO alliance, is being openly challenged, from the release of the Twitter files, to the powerful revelation by acclaimed journalist Seymour Hersh, that the U.S. blew up the North Stream pipelines, targeting both Russia and NATO ally Germany. The crack in the narrative is bringing more people into the streets, as the U.S.-NATO commitment to provoke and escalate this life-and-death crisis is becoming more obvious.
A coalition of "opposites" is growing against the oligarchy's genocidal wars. Thousands gathered on Feb. 19, 2023 at the Lincoln memorial, DC.
The second factor, highly threatening to those trying to crush this dynamic, is the emergence of the Schiller Institute-LaRouche movement as a key part of this mobilization. Despite efforts to repeat the old slanders against the late Lyndon LaRouche, members of his organization have been everywhere, both on the podium as speakers, and in the crowd, circulating Helga Zepp-LaRouche's call for a new strategic and development architecture to replace the neo-con/neoliberal alliance which, in its backing the war -- to weaken Russia and then take on China -- is pushing humanity to a possible nuclear World War III. People hungry for answers to how to end the war, and move to a durable peace, expressed their excitement about meeting LaRouche organizers, and having the old lies about LaRouche dispelled.
The demonstration included a video of a powerful presentation by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, and speeches by LaRouche leader Diane Sare, a candidate for U.S. Senate in New York in 2024, and Jose Vega, a young activist becoming famous for his blunt, truthful interventions which expose the War Hawks in Congress, such as phony "progressive" Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
All agreed that this event was a promising start at building a powerful anti-war movement, by making the ultimate aim the economic reform that can assure a durable peace. Visits to Congressional offices are planned, along with more demonstrations aimed at building the dynamic behind this emerging coalition. Marching out wobbly Joe Biden in a war zone to rally support for the war, even with the full effect of the lying media behind him, will do little to blunt the growing power of citizens armed with the power of truth, and the love for all mankind.
